IBEW Algebra & Functions Complete Guide
Linear systems, quadratic factoring, rational equations, and functions
The NJATC / IBEW Electrical Aptitude Test allocates 33 questions (46 minutes) strictly to Algebra and Functions. Pacing averages 83 seconds per question. Mastery of systematic equation manipulation, quadratic factoring, and function evaluation is required to achieve a qualifying stanine score of 4 or higher.
On the Test
Official NJATC test section consists of 33 algebra questions. Calculators are strictly prohibited. Every operation must be computed on scratch paper with zero algebraic sign errors.
- โขPerform identical operations to both sides of the equals sign to isolate the target variable.
- โขWhen clearing denominators in rational equations, multiply every term by the least common denominator (LCD).
- โขWhen multiplying or dividing an inequality by a negative number, always reverse the inequality symbol.
- โขIn function notation f(x), replace every occurrence of the variable x with the input argument inside the parentheses.
- โขFactoring quadratics: for x^2 + bx + c = 0, find two factors of c that sum to b.
- โ Common trap: Sign errors during distribution: for example, distributing -3(2x - 5) produces -6x + 15, not -6x - 15. Forgetting to flip the sign on the constant term is the #1 cause of lost points.
Multi-Step Linear Equations & Isolating Variables
Systems of Two Linear Equations
Polynomial Expansion (FOIL) and Factoring Quadratics
Exponents, Radicals, and Powers of 10
Function Notation f(x) and Linear Slopes
Key Takeaways
- โWrite out intermediate steps on scratch paper. Do not compute sign reversals mentally.
- โCheck answers by plugging candidate choices back into the original equation.
- โMemorize perfect squares up to 15^2 (225) to factor quadratics instantly without trial and error.
- โWhen simplifying rational equations, multiply all terms by the LCD to eliminate all fractions in step 1.
- โNegative times negative is positive: double check all parentheses distribution signs.
Key Terms
Linear Equation
An algebraic equation of first degree whose graph is a straight line.
System of Equations
Two or more equations with shared variables solved simultaneously.
FOIL Method
Binomial multiplication order: First, Outer, Inner, Last terms.
Roots / Zeroes
The x-values that make a polynomial equal to zero.
Negative Exponent
x^(-n) = 1 / x^n; specifies the reciprocal of the positive power.
Slope (m)
Rate of vertical change over horizontal change: (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1).
Negative Reciprocal
A number flipped and multiplied by -1; defines perpendicular slopes.
Stanine Score
Standard Nine scale (1โ9) used by the Electrical Training ALLIANCE.
