Pressure Vessel Geometry, Hydrostatics & AWS Weld Symbols
Circumference, mean diameter, plate stretchout, and welding blueprint symbols
Boilermakers build, erect, and repair high-pressure boilers, nuclear reactors, heat exchangers, distillation towers, and storage tanks. The Boilermaker aptitude exam tests vessel geometry, mean diameter stretchouts, hydrostatic test pressures, and AWS welding symbols.
On the Test
Boilermaker apprenticeship aptitude test. Covers circle geometry, cylinder volume, plate thickness stretchouts, weld symbols, and confined space safety.
- โขMean Diameter Rule: Mean Diameter (Dm) = Outside Diameter - Plate Thickness (or Inside Diameter + Plate Thickness).
- โขPlate Stretchout Length: Stretchout = pi * Mean Diameter (pi * Dm).
- โขCylinder Volume: Volume = pi * r^2 * Height.
- โขHydrostatic Test Pressure: ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code requires testing vessels at 1.3 to 1.5 times the Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP).
- โขAWS Weld Symbols: Fillet weld (triangle), Groove weld (square, V, bevel, U), Weld all around (circle at arrow joint).
- โ Common trap: Calculating plate stretchout using the outside diameter (OD) or inside diameter (ID). Heavy steel plate compresses on the inside and stretches on the outside when rolled into a cylinder. The true neutral axis is the Mean Diameter (Dm). Using OD makes the rolled plate too long; using ID makes it too short.

Hydrostatic Testing and Pressure Containment
AWS Standard Welding Symbols on Blueprints
Key Takeaways
- โPlate Stretchout = pi * Mean Diameter (ID + thickness).
- โNever test pressure vessels with air; water is incompressible and safe for hydro-testing.
- โA triangle symbol on a welding print denotes a Fillet weld.
Key Terms
MAWP
Maximum Allowable Working Pressure certified under the ASME Boiler Code.
Mean Diameter
The diameter measured at the centerline of plate thickness; neutral axis for rolling.
Hydrostatic Test
Pressure test filling a vessel with water to check for leaks and joint deformation.
Confined Space
An enclosed vessel with limited entry/exit not intended for continuous occupancy.
